East Huntspill CC

WELCOME TO EAST HUNSPILL CC NEW WEBSITE

East Huntspill CC was reformed in 1976 following many years of dormancy. There had been a cricket club in the village dating back to the 1920's, but the club as it is today has been in existence for 31 years.

In 1976, the club had no ground of its own; all matches were played away. However, thanks to the generosity of local farmer Ted Watts, the club was allowed the use of one of his fields at Merry Farm, for a nominal annual rental. The club expanded accordingly now a base had been found, and a small wooden clubhouse was erected. After Ted Watts' death, his widow allowed the club the use of the field, and she became president of the club in recognition of this. The club still plays an annual 'Memorial Match' in memory of Ted.

In 1990, the club joined the Somerset Cricket League, and a 2nd XI was formed a few years later. After many years languishing in the bottom division, two successive promotions were achieved, taking the club into division 4, where they stayed for 3 seasons. Unfortunately, a poor season in 2002 resulted in relegation to division 5. The 2nd XI have languished in the bottom division, but serving the club well as a 'breeding ground' for up and coming players.
2007 saw the 1st XI perform an unprecedented 'double', winning both league division 6 and the league cup trophy.

The club now owns the ground, thanks to a generous grant and loan by the Sports Council, and an all-purpose clubhouse is nearing completion, funded by the Foundation for Sport and the Arts. The ground is regarded as one of the more picturesque in the league, with no roads or houses in view.

New members are always welcome, irrespective of ability, and further information about the club can be obtained from ehcc@hotmail.co.uk

Practice sessions are held at the ground every Wednesday during the season, commencing at around 6:30 pm. In the winter, indoor nets are arranged.
